Mr Abdul Razak bin Osman, 47, is a personal trainer at NTUC Health’s SilverCOVE. The integrated wellness facility, located at Marsiling Height, provides a range of services to support the health, fitness, safety, social, recreational and learning needs of the elderly living in the area.
A former gym instructor, Mr Abdul Razak guides the seniors in their fitness regime and monitors their progress. “I find satisfaction in helping the seniors. It is different from working with young people,” he said. “Here, we help seniors to age actively, with stretching, muscle toning and firming exercises on the machines, and simple aerobic movements.”
SilverCOVE has senior-friendly fitness equipment professionally designed to keep seniors of all ages and abilities fit. By scanning their cards against these specialised gym equipment, members can find out how far they have achieved their fitness goals.
Mrs Rukumany, 67, one of SilverCOVE’s regular members, attests to the importance of exercise. After a hip operation 2 years ago due to a fall, she found that the low-intensity exercises helped her recover better and regain strength. “I feel stronger and have more energy now”, said Mrs Rukumany who attends an hour-long exercise sessions six days a week with a regular exercise group. “Everybody likes it here, and I’m asking my neighbour to come and join us!”
